DRS GETS FIRST CLASS 88

The long-awaited arrival of the first Class 88 in the UK finally occurred on January 22, with No. 88002 Prometheus being unloaded at Southampton.

Transported from Spain aboard the Autostar, a roll on/roll off ship, the loco departed the docks by road that afternoon as far as Allelys’ haulage yard at Studley, Warwickshire.

It is pictured there the day after before continuing northwards for unloading at Carlisle Brunthill on the morning of January 24; restrictive access preventing a direct delivery to Kingmoor TMD.

Once railed, Nos. 66422 and 66432 were provided to ‘top and tail’ the Stadler-built electric loco as the 8Z66/09.30 working to the DRS depot at the other end of Kingmoor Yard, and is pictured after arriving inside the shed.

It will now undergo acceptance, with the rest of the 10-strong class due to be shipped to Workington for rail delivery. Peter Munton, DRS
