LOCO-HAULED FROM NEWQUAY: GWR Class 57

No. 57605 Totnes Castle came to the rescue of a CrossCountry HST on the Newquay branch on May 29 after the HST was failed with coolant issues.

LOCO-HAULED FROM NEWQUAY: GWR Class 57
Nos. 43366+43378 departed Newquay with the 1S55/11.32 to Edinburgh, but got into difficulties on the single-track section before the passing loop at Goonbarrow.

The train returned to Newquay, and the ‘57’ was sent from Penzance to take it forward, eventually leaving at 16.55 (pictured just before departure) and running as the 1T55 to Plymouth.

This is reported to be the second HST failure on this service so far this season.

Regular loco-hauled trains to Newquay ended in 1987.
