Network Rail’s Class 57/3 No. 57312 leads Class 73 No. 73136 Perseverance past Corfe Town end while working the 2S05 1045 Norden–Swanage on May 12 during the Swanage Railway’s Diesel Gala.

A splendid ‘Shambles’ at Swanage!

It was the first passenger run of No. 57312 since its new role at a NR ‘Snow Train’ locomotive. Indeed, top marks to Network Rail and to the owner of the ‘ED’, Transmart Trains (formerly The Class 73 Locomotive Preservation Company) for coming to the rescue of gala organiser Marcus Betts, when the convoy bringing the guest locomotives was cancelled due to locomotive failures. It was a last minute ‘Plan B’ which saw these two welcome machines deputise.

The headboard on the Class 57/3 was produced to reflect the unbelievable saga which saw the convoy cancelled but all turned out well in the end – superb weather and an attendance only fractionally below that of last year’s record figure. See pages 36 and 37 for a selection of Diesel Gala images from some of the May events, all of which were plagued with problems and headaches for the organisers but all of which were successful.
