Bachmann's SR brake van
By: Gareth Bayer
First view of new Southern Railway pill box brake van
Bachmann has shown off pictures of the first engineering sample of the forthcoming ‘OO’ gauge SR pill box brake van, which will be produced in both left-hand and right-hand ducket versions, as well as with either standard of 2+ planked sides. The models will also feature other subtle differences made over the years, plus two styles of sandbox, open-framed or enclosed axleguards, and moulded single or equal brake gear mechanisms. Finally, three versions of compartment door/window detail will be produced. Four liveries will initially be available, SR brown, BR grey, BR bauxite and BR departmental olive green.

This fills an important gap in the range for 00 gauge Southern Modellers. I have been waiting for a ready to run version since Hornby-Dublo stopped making their SR one in the early 1950s and have been making do with a Ks kit. There are 2 real ones on the Swanage Railway. I will have to see if they are left or right handed and what sort of planks they have.
