From Welsh coal trains to ‘royal’ duties in 47 years
By: Web Editor
West Coast Railway’s Class 37 No. 37685 leads the ‘Royal Scotsman’, working the 1H88 Weymss Bay to Edinburgh leg of the Western Tour, taken at Greenfaulds.
The date was August 29. This locomotive has had a fascinating career since being brand new to Llandore in April 1964 as No. D6934. It later became No. 37234 before refurbishment saw it renumbered 37685. Spells all over the country – including hauling the Inverness sleeper when adorned in InterCity livery and a stint in France – are all part and parcel of this much travelled locomotive’s biography – highly likely to see its 50th birthday in three years’ time.
