By: RAIL EXPRESS
The Waterside line, which serves the Fawley refinery, could see passenger services return as far as Hythe station.

The freight-only line serving Fawley oil terminal could be reopened to passengers once more if plans come to fruition. The line last saw a regular passenger service on February 14, 1966, closed under the Dr Beeching regime.
Hampshire County Council has agreed to fund a feasibility study into converting the branch for passenger use. It has already been preliminarily costed at £3 million and the study will consider how this funding can be procured.
The plan was submitted three years ago as part of a £73 million propoisal to improved rail links through the New Forest. The proposals also advocated relaying the Brockenhurst to Ringwood line but this appears to have been shelved.
