The Severn Valley Railway’s three-day diesel gala on May 19-21 featured an impressive line-up of locos that attracted a record number of visitors.

IT was always going to be hard for the Severn Valley Railway to top its 2015 diesel event, which formed part of its 50th anniversary celebrations and included a rare visit of unique ‘Clayton’ No. D8568 from the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway.

But the 2016 event was even better, both in terms of locos taking part and visitor numbers.

The undoubted stars of this year’s gala was the pair of Network Rail Class 73/9s Nos. 73951 and 73952 (see front cover) – even though No. 73951 disgraced itself by failing on the second day, leaving its stablemate to soldier on alone.
