GB Railfreight is offering a large amount of Class 20 mileage in July at a bargain fare.
NOW a welcome (and commendable) part of the railway calendar, GBRf’s charity railtours offer both good value and a great day out. The latest one announced, ‘The Charity Chibble’, runs on Sunday, July 16, and is a one-way job – being a way of getting the empty stock back from East Anglia to Eastleigh after a company staff outing the day before.
The tour will depart Ipswich at 08.50 with a Class 66, running to Peterborough via pick-up points at Stratford and Cambridge. The ‘66’ will then hand over to a pair of Harry Needle’s Class 20 locomotives for a circular run to Sheffield via Toton, Worksop, Gainsborough and Spalding. A different Class 66 will then take over for a run to Basingstoke (where the train terminates) via Finsbury Park and Reading.

Full and part fares are available, payable on board on the day by cash only. All accommodation is First Class.
■ Pathfinder may also be operating a tour using DRS Class 20s out of York on September 23. With DRS possibly laying up its ‘20s’ after this year’s leaf-fall season, this could be a final opportunity to ride behind them on the main line – although that has been threatened before.
