Hitachi turns to the past

In a surprise development, a Class 08 has been hired to assist with shunting at the company’s north east factory.

THE beginning of April brought another new contract for Railway Support Services with the unexpected arrival of No. 08484 Captain Nathaniel Darell at Hitachi’s Newton Aycliffe plant in County Durham on the 4th.

The shunter had departed its previous duty at Cemex’s Washwood Heath sleeper manufacturing facility a day earlier, this role having come to an end due to the impending closure of the Birmingham site to allow for redevelopment as part of HS2.

No. 08484 had been resident since October 2016 when RSS took over the contract from RMS Locotec.

Quite possibly the oldest piece of equipment at Newton Aycliffe, No. 08484 will provide shunting support to the resident Zephir Lok road/rail shunter.
