C=Rail plans pocket wagon in ‘N’

by

A ready-to-run GE Rail Services KQA/KTA container wagon is due to be released in 2mm scale next year.

THE range of container wagons available in ‘N’ gauge is to be expanded once again with C=Rail Intermodal announcing its intention to produce the distinctive KQA/KTA pocket wagons in ready-to-run form. Due for release in early 2018, it marks the company’s first venture away from container models, although with the proprietor’s involvement as one half of Realtrack Models, there is plenty of experience behind the project.

The pocket wagons have been a key component of Freightliner’s wagon fleet for almost two decades, being capable of carrying one 40ft or two 20ft ‘hi-cube’ containers. No. GERS97710 is seen at Southampton Millbrook on September 5, 2006. Arran Aird

Built by Rautaruukki in Finland, the pocket wagons first appeared in the UK in 1997, a fleet of 75 eventually being delivered for use on Freightliner services. Their unusual well design allows the carriage of 9ft 6in ‘hi-cube’ containers within the standard UK loading gauge, making them useful wagons on routes where gauge clearance work has not been carried out. Initially owned by Tiphook and coded KQA with international RIV numbering, the mid 2000s saw them renumbered into the domestic private owner series and recoded KTA under the new ownership of GE Rail Services.

Work on the pocket wagon is currently in the early stages but pre-orders will be able to be placed via C=Rail’s website within the next month or so. Three models are initially planned, one of which will be empty while the other two will be supplied with the new 40ft ‘hi-cube’ container that is being developed in conjunction with Revolution Trains. The liveries on these boxes will be NYK Logistics and OOCL. Due to currency fluctuations, a price has yet to be announced.
