Today’s few remaining Class 08/09 shunters are confined to yards and depots, but the once thousand-strong fleet was also entrusted to some local trip workings until the demise of wagonload freight in the 1990s. David Ratcliffe presents a selection of workings in the 1980s and 90s.

RIGHT: The two Class 08 locomotives based at Immingham Reception Sidings were kept very busy. In addition to shunting the yard, they could also be found tripping wagons to the various customers located on the adjacent dock estate, as well as to the nearby oil refineries at South Killingholme. Class 08 No. 08665 is pictured leaving Immingham R.S. on September 17, 1990 with the evening trip for Lindsey Refinery, which on this occasion comprised a discharged traction gas oil tank from Immingham TMD and five repaired tank wagons from the Marcroft Engineering outstation siding.
