Bachmann announces DRS ‘choppers’

An all new EE Type 1 headlines Bachmann’s ‘OO’ gauge programme for 2017, with plenty of other D&E interest.

It has taken over 20 years but 4mm modellers can finally look forward to a ready-to-run Class 20/3 in DRS colours. Bachmann will be producing the RFS-converted batch, which feature multiple-working equipment at both ends. ‘Compass’ liveried No. 20308 stands inside Crewe Gresty Bridge on July 10, 2010. In a change to its usual tradition, Bachmann announced its new ranges for the next 18 months or so on January 8, some two months earlier than normal. As ever, the manufacturer unveiled a diverse range of D&E models with several new tooling subjects to look forward to as well as a good selection of reliveries.

The highlight in ‘OO’ gauge is undoubtedly the appearance of the refurbished Class 20/3s, as originally modified for Direct Rail Services but also now employed by HNRC. Highly requested for many years, Bachmann has finally bowed to the pressure and will deliver the missing element of the DRS motive power fleet in the form of the RFS-converted batch. Encompassing Nos. 20306-15, these ten were all rebuilt during 1998 at Doncaster and featured several differences compared to the original quintet of Nos. 20301-05, these initial five Brush conversions not being covered by the new model.

In addition to the all-new body, Bachmann has confirmed that the Class 20/3s will also have a completely retooled chassis, this including the cosmetic parts as well as the internals. This will allow both directional and internal lighting to be fitted to the Type 1s for the first time. Although not officially confirmed, the expectation is that the new chassis will act as a springboard to deliver a retooled standard Class 20 in the future. In the meantime, liveries planned for the rebuilds are the DRS duo of Nos. 20306 and 20312 with, respectively, original and ‘compass’ brandings along with No. 20311 in HNRC orange.
