Decorated ‘Super Sprinter’ unveiled

The Realtrack Models Class 156 is getting closer to release with the appearance of the first painted sample.

ANNOUNCED at Warley last November, Realtrack Models’ new ‘OO’ gauge Class 156 DMU is making good progress with the end of March bringing the arrival of a full factory-decorated sample. As detailed previously, the two models in the current ScotRail Saltire livery have moved ahead of the trio of First Group units in the production schedule and it is this pair that is due to go on sale at the DEMU Showcase event on June 3-4.

The current ScotRail livery will be the first colour scheme to arrive on the Realtrack Class 156, followed by the previous First Group colours. Early 2018 will bring East Midlands Trains, Provincial and Strathclyde PTE orange and black.

Manufacturing partner Rapido Trains has provided these pictures of the decorated sample exclusively to Rail Express Modeller, giving a good idea of how the finished model will look. As might be expected on such a complex livery, a number of adjustments still need to be made, such as the colour of some of the underframe components, alignment of the spots on the cab corners and some detail painting. Also not fitted to this sample, but which will be present on the production models, are windscreen wipers and radio roof pods.

The models are limited to just 200 examples each with over half of both ScotRail Saltire releases already pre-ordered at £200 each. As a reminder of the differences between them,
No. 156445 pictured here features Abellio logos on the doors, bi-lingual ‘Scotland’s Railway’ lettering and destination displays of Queen Street and Fort William. The other set,
No. 156494, will feature First logos on the doors, all English lettering and Glasgow Central-Newcastle displays.
