Modelling a unique Mk.3

Looking for something a little different to add to an HST set, Daryl Harris-Saxton describes how he modelled the experimental and ultimately unique Mk.3 TSCD coach in 4mm.

I GOT the bug to model Mk.3 Trailer Standard Conductor Disabled (TSCD) No. 45084 when flicking through a 1994 pocket book, and wondering what it was. I started my research by looking in various books, searching images online and asking questions on the Diesel & Electric Modellers United (DEMU) forum to find out more about this unique coach.

The TSCD started out as Trailer Guards Standard (TGS) No. 44084 and was converted in early 1993 at Derby RTC. The intention was to provide a conductor’s office in the centre of the train rather than at the end, giving better visibility to passengers for assistance. The new office with side corridor replaced the standard guard’s office, while at the other end of the coach, the toilet was rebuilt for disabled use. In the adjacent saloon area, a tip-up seat with wheelchair space was also provided.

While garnering lots of helpful information, I faced the modeller’s nightmare of not finding a single photo of the other side of the coach. Inevitably, as a one-off trial vehicle that proved unsuccessful, pictures are not common, especially as it was converted again into Trailer Standard (TS) No. 42360 around 1999.
