A brand new 40ft refrigerated container from intermodal specialist C=Rail will provide welcome variation to 4mm scale container services.

Ice Ice Baby: New C=Rail box is coolest container yet

After years of being ignored, intermodal operations have become much easier to model in the last few years thanks to the efforts of companies like C=Rail. Arran Aird’s company has gone on to bigger things recently, linking up with DC Kits to produce ready-to-run wagons and multiple units under the Real Track Models brand, but he hasn’t forgotten his roots in container modelling. Having already produced a useful selection of boxes, including tanktainers and bulktainers, the latest product to join the family is a 40ft x 9ft 6in ‘high cube’ reefer (refrigerated) container. Seen in all types of intermodal services, and even in ‘block’ train operation, it represents a common example built over the last 10 years.

So far, the two paint schemes released have been the plain white branded liveries of MOL (Mitsui OSK Line, with its superb alligator logo) and Maersk line. As we have come to expect from C=Rail, the quality of the mouldings, the paint and detail is absolutely first class. The refrigeration equipment such as the compressor, fan, computer control panel and associated pipework is all present and correct, with separate locking bars and etched mesh details.

Paint and labelling is all crisp and sharp and even the smallest labels are legible under a magnifying glass. Underneath, there are moulded in recesses that allow positive location of the container on most model flat wagons such as the Dapol FEA, Real Track FLA and Bachmann ‘Multifret’.

C=Rail Intermodal

Ultimately, this is a quality model of the kind of container that modern freight modellers have been after for a good many years and, given the number of liveries carried, it is sure to be a colourful and growing sight on model intermodal trains around the UK.
