Anyone wanting to see multiple working in action should head to the northern half of the West Coast Main Line, where pairs of diesel and electric units and locos can be found in everyday use.

The largest operator of Class 90s (Nos. 90017-90040) is DB Cargo, with Freightliner owning 11 and Porterbrook leasing the other 15 for use on Greater Anglia passenger services out of Liverpool Street. Two of DBC’s fleet, Nos. 90040 and 90018 painted in the house red colours, are seen heading north past Lamington (South Lanarkshire) on March 25 with the previous night’s 6X65/20.28 Didcot to Mossend.
