Britain’s newest station, Inverness Airport, welcomed its first passengers on February 3, following an official opening ceremony the day before.
ScotRail No. 158713, forming the 1Z50 13.21 Inverness-Inverness Airport was the first train to serve the station, carrying invited guests including Scottish transport minister Jenny Gilruth. The ‘158’ returned as the 1Z51 14.19 to Inverness. The first public train was the following morning’s 1B70 04.56 Inverness-Edinburgh Waverley, formed of ScotRail No. 170471.
The station, which will be served by 35 trains per day is located on the Inverness-Aberdeen route and took 15 months to build. There are two 160-metre-long platforms, waiting shelters, seats, ticket machines and an accessible footbridge. Inverness Airport station is part of a wider £42 million investment in the local railway which also included construction of a new 950-metre passing loop, renewal of 4.3-miles of track and upgrading signalling.
