The Llangollen and Corwen Railway has hailed its Diesel Power and Ultimate 80s Weekend as one of the most successful special events in the railway’s recent history after record visitor numbers attended the two-day celebration. Held across Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 May, the event combined heritage diesel locomotives, authentic 1980s entertainment and live music, creating what organisers described as “a diesel gala with a completely different atmosphere.”

The railway confirmed the event broke previous attendance records for a diesel gala, with the unique 1980s twist proving hugely popular with railway enthusiasts, families and visitors from across the UK. Alongside the main line locomotives, visitors were also able to enjoy Class 08 shunters 08195 and 08202, authentic 1980s station decorations, retro gaming experiences, themed catering and non-stop 80s music provided by DJ Pete Edwards at Llangollen Station.
Saturday evening saw Llangollen Station transformed into “Buffers Nightclub” as Rhythm Train, widely regarded as one of Wales’ best party bands, performed inside a special marquee in front of a packed crowd. The high-energy evening concert featured live music, professional lighting and classic hits from the 1980s and beyond, helping cap what organisers described as “an unforgettable weekend in the Dee Valley.”

George Walker, one of the organisers from the Llangollen Railway Diesel Team, said, “We knew the idea of combining a traditional diesel gala with a full 1980s party atmosphere was something a bit different, but the response completely exceeded our expectations. The feedback from visitors has been incredible. People really embraced the fun side of the event, whether that was the music, the fancy dress, the retro gaming or simply enjoying the trains in such a unique atmosphere. It was fantastic to see so many families, enthusiasts and first-time visitors enjoying the railway together.”
Pete Edwards added, “We wanted to create an event that celebrated heritage diesel traction while also giving people a brilliant day out and something they would remember. The support over the weekend was absolutely phenomenal and the atmosphere at Llangollen Station on Saturday night was something very special. Rhythm Train were outstanding and helped create a fantastic end to an amazing first day. We would like to thank everyone who attended, supported the event and helped make it such a success, especially our volunteers and staff who worked incredibly hard throughout the weekend.”

The railway has confirmed that planning is already underway for the return of the Diesel Power and Ultimate 80s Weekend in 2027 following the overwhelming success of this year’s event.
The railway’s busy summer programme continues this month with the return of several major events.
