Class 442s finish on Gatwick duties

SUFFICIENT Class 387/2s were in service during September to allow the remaining Class 442s to be withdrawn from Gatwick Express duties.

The final booked ‘GatEx’ working was in the early hours of September 17, when No. 442413 worked the 1D02/00.02 Victoria to Gatwick and 1U07/00.50 return. This leaves just four peak-hour diagrams into and out of London Bridge for the former ‘Wessex Electrics’ from a pool of
Nos. 442402/06/08/10/13/19.

More units have been moved to Ely for storage in recent weeks, No. 442420 being transferred by
No. 47815 as the 5E42/12.45 Eastleigh Works-Ely Papworth on August 31.
